The African continent is one of the least vaccinated, despite the goodwill displayed by the rich countries, vaccination inequality is widening.
In Lagos (Nigeria), at the time of prayer, the Imam delivers a different speech to his faithful and asks that they be vaccinated against Covid-19. The injections are done in the parking lot of the mosque on an improvised dispensary. “I am here because I am 18 years old and I was asked to come for the vaccine”, tells a resident of Lagos. With 210 million inhabitants, the country is the most populous in Africa, but only 2% of the population is vaccinated.
In the countryside, the message is sometimes difficult to get across. WHO is worried today about the very poor results regarding vaccination. “Only 102 million Africans are vaccinated. This corresponds to 7.5% of the continent’s population. Over 80% of Africans have not received a single dose.”, reports Abdou Salam Gueye, WHO Regional Director for Africa. At the last summit between China and Africa, the Chinese promised more than a billion doses to African countries.
