The first 13 Israeli hostages released by Hamas joined Israel on Friday, November 24. Beyond the relief, the question of their care and their trauma now arises, in a country where war is still raging.

As the ambulances brought the hostages back to Israel on the evening of Friday, November 24, the joy of liberation could be heard. The delicate question of their care now arises. An Israeli soldier was dedicated to each person released. The soldiers responsible for welcoming the children received a manual. They must find the words to try to reassure. After an initial medical examination, the released hostages were transferred to hospitals across the country. They found their loved ones there

Disoriented ex-hostages

What happened during their seven weeks of captivity? In a circular, the Israeli Ministry of Health specifies that“in the event of suspicion of sexual abuse or torture, staff must inform the doctor, in order to initiate appropriate treatment”. Beyond the trauma, the loss of bearings is also difficult to understand. Eyal Nouri’s aunt was part of the first group of hostages released on Friday. It describes a disoriented woman, who was not “not fully aware of all the events that began on October 7. (…) She did not know that her husband had been killed.”
