Three days after the devastating floods in eastern Libya, the death toll now exceeds 3,800, announced the spokesperson for the Ministry of the Interior on Wednesday September 13. More than 3,000 of them have already been buried. Previous figures, communicated early Tuesday afternoon, showed 2,300 deaths caused by Storm Daniel. Among these victims, 400 are of foreign origin. They are mainly Sudanese and Egyptians, specify the authorities.

This toll could rise in the coming hours: Tuesday evening, more than 5,000 people remained missing, around 7,000 others were declared injured by the emergency services. Three Libyan Red Crescent volunteers were also killed during the rescue operations.

The Elysée declared that it was sending a field hospital to “to accommodate around a hundred victims per day” explained Frédéric Harrault, spokesperson for French Civil Security.
