While Marion Maréchal and the French Bishops’ Conference (CEF) seemed irritated by certain scenes from the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in Paris, neither Marine Le Pen nor Jordan Bardella expressed the slightest criticism.

In the controversy that shook part of the right, the far right and the Catholic Church following the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games, two voices were notable by their absence: those of Marine Le Pen and Jordan Bardella. Are we right to be surprised by this silence? It is true that it contrasts with the fury of Marion Maréchal who, at 9:14 p.m. on Friday July 26, in front of the TV with her children, spoke on X: “the kissing troupe, the drag queens, the humiliation of the Republican Guard forced to dance with Aya Nakamura…”. The message has 14 million views!
From the Republicans to Philippe de Villiers, via the Catholic Church, others feel attacked by what they consider to be a blasphemous misappropriation of Christ’s Last Supper.
But with Marine Le Pen or Jordan Bardella, there is none of that, even though they are very vocal about French medals.
In reality, it is not so surprising. According to a source who knows her well, men kissing is not a subject for Marine Le Pen. A threesome? What a great deal. The president of the group in the Assembly has always said: in our country, everyone is free on social issues. In March, for the constitutionalization of abortion, she voted for, but accepted that 24 RN deputies voted against.
Is it a political strategy or convictions? Let’s say that it is above all an evolution, which accompanied the de-demonization. In 2014, when marriage for all was adopted, Marine Le Pen promised that she would abolish it. She no longer says it! In fact, as early as 2010, Marine Le Pen made the old guard of the FN choke, her father in particular, by explaining that “in some neighborhoods, it is not good to be a woman, nor homosexual, nor Jewish… nor even French or white.” For the sociologist Éric Fassin, the national and racial question is “turns into a question of gender and sexuality.” “We” would treat our women, even our homosexuals, well, unlike“them” The foreigners.
Jordan Bardella, president of the RN, is probably more conservative. Was he asked to keep quiet this time? Impossible to say, but impossible to rule it out. An IFOP poll for Stubborn before the 2022 presidential election showed that the LGBT electorate in the RN exceeded the national average. The highest score was promised to Emmanuel Macron: 22%, followed directly by Marine Le Pen: 17%. Far ahead of Anne Hidalgo’s 4% in the PS. Others in Europe, Geert Wilders in particular, the Dutch Prime Minister, usually defend gays as if to prolong his anti-Muslim position. But this time, the opening ceremony made him lose his temper! Enough to make the silence of the Le Pen/Bardella duo even more deafening.
