Created 40 years ago, the Côte Bleue Marine Park is a sanctuary where environmental protection teams and fishermen live together in harmony. Their objective ? Protect biodiversity.
The Côte Bleue Marine Park is a small paradise that stretches over 28 kilometers of coastline, west of Marseille (Bouches-du-Rhône). Day and night, the teams of the marine park watch, in particular on the totally protected area of Carry-le-Rouet (Bouches-du-Rhône). The 85 hectare reserve is delimited by six buoys. The sanctuary, created nearly 40 years ago, is now home to remarkable biodiversity: nearly 250 species. There are sea bream, sea bass and even lobsters.
Some had almost disappeared. “They feel protected in this space. They understood that there was no pressure”, explains Alizée Angelini, director of the Côte Bleue Marine Park. When it was created, the park aroused the reluctance of many fishermen. The discourse has now changed. Hervé Gout-Vernier casts his nets around the reserve every day. “Since it was created, we find fish that we had more, or much less”, he notes. The fishermen have thus asked to protect a second zone, of 210 hectares. At the port of Carro (Bouches-du-Rhône), the fishermen’s wives are also delighted to find certain fish on their stalls.
