The Constitutional Council rejected, on Wednesday, July 31, a request from La France insoumise (LFI) contesting the re-election of Yaël Braun-Pivet as President of the National Assembly. In its decision, the court said it had no jurisdiction over the matter. “No provision of the Constitution or of an organic law adopted on its basis gives the Constitutional Council jurisdiction to rule on such a request”the authority specifies.
LFI had seized the Constitutional Council four days after the re-election of the Macronist MP as President of the National Assembly. Yaël Braun-Pivet had been re-elected in the third round with 220 votes, ahead of the communist André Chassaigne (207 votes) and the National Rally MP Sébastien Chenu (141 votes).
LFI MP Mathilde Panot had stated that the voices of “17 deputy ministers”present during the vote, had allowed her to be re-elected to the “perch”. The LFI leader in the National Assembly had denounced “a violation of the separation of powers.” Yaël Braun-Pivet welcomed the Constitutional Council’s decision on Wednesday, saying that it “testifies to the proper functioning of our rule of law.”
