In her small village grocery store closed for a month and a half, Tatiana has found a smile: “We are relieved, but we are still afraid. We hid because of the rockets, especially at night.” Here at North West from kyiv, near the Belarusian border, there was little fighting but Russian airstrikes. However, the population remains on the alert as a residential area of the capital was targeted by a new bombardment on Thursday 28 April.
It is through this northern border that the Russian tanks deployed in Belarus entered and then emerged from Ukraine. Svetlana shows the photo of a damaged house, her grandmother’s: “Look, there is a lot of damage on several streets.”

Russian forces are now concentrated in the east of the country, but in the small town of Ovroutch, air alerts are rare. Yet Svetlana does not sleep well: “Many of our boys are on the front line in Donbass. For me, the war continues until they return”. Her friend Svitlana is suspicious of the Belarusian regime close to the Kremlin: “Right next to us, fifteen kilometers away, are the Belarusians. And no one knows what their leaders are up to. [Avec] this so-called country, friend and brother, we are not safe”.
