Did Uber benefit from the help of Emmanuel Macron, then Minister of the Economy, to develop in France? An investigation by several journalists tries to understand.

In 2014, Emmanuel Macron was Minister of the Economy when taxi drivers protested against competition from Uber, which they considered unfair. The Californian company wants to launch “Uber pop” to allow everyone to become a driver, even for a race. But, on October 1, 2014, the Thévenoud law made this device illegal. A meeting is then organized between Emmanuel Macron and the CEO of Uber at the time. At the end of this meeting, a lobbyist for Uber exults. “France loves us after all”he wrote in an email.

In exchange for abandoning Uber pop, the company asks the Minister of the Economy to make the conditions for becoming an Uber driver more flexible. At the beginning of 2016, a government decision reduced the training time to become a VTC driver from 250 hours to seven hours. Éric Coquerel, chairman (LFI / Nupes) of the Finance Committee at the National Assembly, is asking for a commission of inquiry to find out if Emmanuel Macron has given in to lobbyists.
