This is a big change for the 60,000 inhabitants of Chambéry. From this Friday evening, the town hall decided to cut public lighting from midnight to five o’clock in the morning. The objective is of course to save energy but also to lower the bill, while electricity prices are soaring. According to the town hall, cut public lighting at night should save the City 200,000 euros per year.
“I find it good“, confides Éric, seated with friends on the terrace of a bar.Everyone must make an effort at their level, and it is good that the City is setting an example.“Olivier also seems rather satisfied with the measure, he who lived in the city center. “I didn’t have shutters, so it’s complicated to sleep with the lampposts, it’s rather pleasant to have night in Chambéry.”

The Carré Curial stays lit at night
Others like Naïma are more worried. “I’ve lived on rue Croix d’Or for 15 years and I can see young girls doing things when they come home late at night, they’re scared“, explains the trader. “So I find that it is not normal to no longer have light at night.“
“We do not see why it would go wrong in Chambéry“, answers Aurélie Le Meur, first deputy to the City of Chambéry. “Other cities and some of our European neighbors are doing it and it’s going very well.“The only exception to this measure, the Carré Curial, which stays on at the request of law enforcementeven if the town hall hopes one day to also cut the current in this sector.
