Anger of farmers: the challenge of food sovereignty

Anger of farmers: the challenge of food sovereignty – (France info)

The executive wishes to enshrine food sovereignty into law, a real objective set by Gabriel Attal. So how can France best protect its production without freezing its exports.

Can France meet its needs and achieve food sovereignty? The question has been around for several decades. Prime Minister Gabriel Attal has mentioned this ambition several times since the start of the farmers’ mobilization. “He says we have to produce more, we’ve never heard that, and that we have to produce better. That suits us well”, explains one of them. For certain products, our dependence on imports is increasing.

The dairy sector is worried

For example, a third of fruits and vegetables come from abroad. French chicken production covers 81% of the country’s needs, but 50% of what we consume is imported. The dairy sector could soon experience the same difficulties. A breeder based in Pas-de-Calais, who sells 800,000 liters of milk each year, fears a future loss of sovereignty. A major food sovereignty plan was already launched last year.
