It is one of the emblematic sites of the famous Chartreuse liqueur: the Caves of Voiron – where the yellow and green elixir was distilled until 2015 – has had a facelift. Since production is now located in Entre-deux-Guiers on the Aiguenoire site, still in Chartreuse, the buildings of Voiron at 10 boulevard Edgar-Kofler are now dedicated to welcoming the public.
A space that has therefore been completely redesigned over the past 18 months, and which was inaugurated in the presence of officials this Friday, June 24. The public will be able to visit it from this Tuesday, June 28.
1,200 exhibits
The new, modernized exhibition, of course, retraces the history of the Carthusian order at the origin of the liqueur. Plants are highlighted as well as many historical pieces – 1,200 authentic objects make up the collection. Visits, previously free, will now be chargeable (12 euros full price; 8 euros for the reduced price and 20 euros for an annual subscription) and will only be done with a guide (1h15 visit). It will also be necessary to book online (www.chartreuse.fr).
What does not change, however, is the tasting offered at the end! A bar is also available during museum opening hours. Consequence of this reorganization: the staff goes from 9 permanent to 26 to accommodate the 60,000 annual visitors.
