The Boy Named If, Elvis Costello & The Imposters

Since the day he decided that Elvis Costello, an improbable and absurd name (king of rock + co-star of a comic duo), suited him better than Declan McManus to face the world, the irreducible binoculars had free rein. Following him is exciting and confusing: you never know where he is. The last few times it has been more than eclectic (hey clock face), then downright incongruous (bring out This Year’s Model, same except for the voices, sung by others in Spanish…). And this time? A very 1970s pop-punk record (Farfisa organ included) with its Imposters, but in the service of songs… for children. Who really aren’t. Those ” children’s tales are actually about everything kids will go through (suffer?) growing up, and it’s not pretty. But it makes for great songs: Magnificent Hurt, Penelope Halfpenny, Mistook me for a Friend are ruthlessly beautiful. Dangerously melodic. Toxic wonders. A current AND quirky youth work to start the year.
