the boss of the PS, Olivier Faure, wants “a vote” to choose the Prime Minister in the event of a victory for the left

He thus contradicts the rebels, who want the largest parliamentary group to propose a name for Matignon.

In the event of victory, the New Popular Front will have to choose its Prime Minister by “a vote” newly elected deputies, said Olivier Faure on Tuesday June 18. “I don’t know any other way to arbitrate,” explained the first secretary of the PS on BFMTV. He thus contradicts the rebels, who want the largest parliamentary group to propose a name for Matignon. “I cannot impose a socialist Prime Minister. No one can impose a rebellious Prime Minister. The only way to achieve this is to vote”he said.

“The only way to make this new majority work will be to have a democratic functioning. In the absence of democratic functioning, things would not last”, launched Olivier Faure. A few days earlier on France 2, Jean-Luc Mélenchon had declared that it is “the largest parliamentary group that proposes a Prime Minister”.

The outgoing head of LFI deputies, Mathilde Panot, confirmed this position on the same channel on Tuesday: “We said that it is the largest group in the National Assembly, within the New Popular Front, which will propose to the other forces the name of a Prime Minister. It is indeed Olivier Faure who ‘said first’she said. “It’s something quite classic in parliamentary systems”she judged.
