On the throne of Jabba
The second season of The Mandalorian ended with a change in the head of organized crime from Mos Espa, on the planet Tatooine. Boba Fett (Temuera Morrison) and Fennec Shand (Ming-Na Wen) got rid of Bib Fortuna, who had succeeded Jabba, and took their place on the throne of the late Hutt’s palace. The first episode of TBOBF, Stranger in a Strange Land, shows us the tandem which meets its new sympathizers as well as some opponents. The dynamic between the two main characters is good, if a little cold. At the same time, they are former bounty hunters. The pace is quite slow and the action rather mundane, but the “space western” vibe still works just as well. The most interesting moments of those first 38 minutes are the flashbacks.
Out of the Sarlaac
Series creator and first episode screenwriter Jon Favreau and director Robert Rodriguez skillfully summarize what happened to Boba Fett between his inglorious fall in Return of the Jedi and his triumphant return in chapter 14 of The Mandalorian. In the end, getting out of the bowels of the Sarlaac was not the most difficult step. Left for dead by Jawas who stole his armor, Fett then ripped it off for a while with the Sandmen who kept him captive. Since then, he has been treating his wounds in bacta baths to ensure his survival. We know that he saved Fennec Shand from a similar situation, but we will have to wait for the next episodes to find out how he got back on his feet before finding her dying in the desert.
Boba Parties?
For a tough guy, Boba Fett was created for a most festive occasion: the TV movie Star Wars Holiday Special. The bounty hunter was already in the draft script of The Empire Strikes Back, written in 1978 by George Lucas, but ultimately made his first appearance that same year in an animated short from the holiday special. His few scenes in The Empire Strikes Back made him one of the fan favorite characters. Lucas also admitted that he would have made Fett’s death “more exciting” in Return of the Jedi if he had realized how popular he was. He recovered by revealing the character’s origins in Attack of the Clones, in 2002. We learn that he is a clone of Jango Fett, also a bounty hunter, who wears Mandalorian armor. Unlike the other millions of clones, Boba is not genetically modified and Jango raised him as his son.
Coming to a galaxy far far away
In addition to the six other episodes of TBOBF and possibly from the third season of The Mandalorian, three other series from the Star Wars universe are planned this year. The most awaited is certainly Obi-wan kenobi, for which Ewan McGregor reprizes his role in the early 2000s trilogy. The action takes place 10 years after the events of Revenge of the Sith. Hayden Christensen also returns in the costume of Darth Vader. Another comeback is Diego Luna as Cassian Andor, from the film Rogue one. Those who have seen it guess thatAndor takes place before this one. A second season of the animated series The Bad Batch should also be broadcast.
