“The Beginning of Life” by Adrien Borne

Adrien Borne signed his first novel “Silk Memory” in 2020, available in paperback for a few weeks. A acclaimed and widely awarded novel, in which he recounts a very heavy family secret during the Second World War.

In “La vie qui commence”, it is also a question of secrecy. A secret that marks, stains and upsets Gabriel, 12 years old. Crazy about the Tour de France, about Pantani, he lives like all the pre-teens of his age, fascinated by his transformation towards adulthood, and happy to hang out with people older than him. He goes to camp, enjoys games, sports adventures untila monitor completely rocks his childhood.

I would like to salute the writing, the accuracy, the modesty and the strength of the words which tell without saying it quite, what the summer camp host will do to him this summer, and the way in which he will manage. , for the rest of his life, with this secret buried deep of these entrails. A terrible situation that Adrien Borne experienced, too, as a child, he has already entrusted it with the delicacy and modesty that we know him. So inevitably, Gabriel is also a bit like him… But at the end of the darkness, there is always a point of light…

Among important people in Gabriel’s life, there is of course his grandfather, but also this strange place that is the Thunder Pit, a sort of large hole from which an incredible quantity of water comes out and in which several divers have lost their life, a Bermuda triangle of the Yonne.

I won’t tell you anything else about the story. I let you discover it. The writing is strong, no frills, no superfluous words. Everything is chosen by the heart.
