A long-awaited toy

In November 2021, I gave a deposit for a Golf R. It’s been over 16 months of waiting and I still haven’t seen a shadow of the beast. I am in a big dilemma: wait for the delivery of the Golf R or opt for a Mini Countryman JCW? With the recent article about new cars disguised as used cars to resell them for a bigger profit, I’m hesitant to wait for the Golf R. Also, my dealership is unable to give me a delivery date. What do you think ? Should I wait or go for another model?

Luke B.

Sorry, but as efficient and agile as it is, the Countryman JCW does not offer the same pleasure as a Golf R. First, we suggest that you go to another dealer (Volkswagen) to see what it offers you as a delivery date. If the news is bad, then why not treat yourself to another model? If you’re looking for an all-wheel-drive vehicle at all costs, you might be interested in the Subaru WRX (which is less expensive, too). Too basic? You might also consider Audi’s S3. This will force you to empty your pockets, but its presentation is even more polished than that of the Volkswagen. You might also consider the Toyota GR Corolla. Now, if two-wheel drive is enough, you could opt for the Civic Type R from Honda or the future Integra Type S from Acura. There is no shortage of choice.

It’s no !

The Acura MDX Type S comes with some pricey little extras…

I just signed for the purchase of a new Acura MDX. I would like to know your opinion on the little gadgets we are offered at the signing. Appearance Protection Program: $2199. Lease protection: $1733. I would be inclined to ignore these too expensive programs.

Serge B.

If you have purchased this vehicle, none of these protections are essential. On the other hand, if it is a rental, you may have an interest in damage protection. Be aware, however, that these warranties are negotiable and that it is imperative to include in the contract that this protection will be reimbursed to you if you ever choose to buy the vehicle at the end of the lease.

A family in search of safety

The 2019 Subaru Impreza ranks better than the Nissan Micra in NHTSA crash tests.

Our family is growing and we want to sell our 2015 Nissan Micra for safety reasons. We think this car does not perform very well in crash tests. What cars would you recommend for a family of two (soon to be three) on the second-hand market?

Mr. Ball

You might consider a recent used car (three years or less) in the higher category (a compact). The Subaru Impreza, Honda Civic (except the coupe) and Mazda 3 all received the best scores according to crash tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). You can check out their site.

A bit of luxury

The BMW X1 certainly offers a certain luxury, and more versatility than the Audi Q3.

I’m a 73 year old retiree shopping for a new car. I like to indulge myself and have a bit of luxury. I want a small or medium SUV with all-wheel drive. My heart swings between the BMW X1 and the Audi Q3. What do you think would be the best buy? I have always been reasonable in my choices (Volkswagen, Toyota, Mitsubishi) and I have kept my vehicles for more than 10 years.

Monica

What is luxury? Several general brands (therefore popular) already offer small treats (heated seats and steering wheel, electronic air conditioning, leather upholstery, etc.) sought after by many motorists. By opting for a vehicle from a more prestigious brand, luxury sometimes has a price (not necessarily more generous guarantees and higher maintenance and repair costs). That said, of the two vehicles mentioned, the X1 is the one that will give you the most driving pleasure and the best versatility.
