200 people including ten gendarmes were mobilized to destroy 162 unsanitary huts, Monday, May 22, in Mayotte. This demolition provokes the anger of the rehoused families.
Destroying slums is more than a way to fight crime and illegal immigration. The prefect of Mayotte presents this as a fight against unsanitary housing: “I remind you that unsanitary conditions put your health at risk when you live in a place like this”. It’s necessary “offer to French people who live in these conditions and to foreigners in a regular situation who have the right to stay on the territory to have suitable accommodation”, explains the latter. For the moment, only half of the families, ie 46, have been rehoused.
More destruction coming soon
These rehousings do not always please the inhabitants, who are considered too far from work or their children’s school. For a resident living in a one-room dwelling with no furniture or equipment, cowards, in a cry of distress: “That’s empty! And me and the lady and the children, where do we sleep? I’m telling the truth here”. Relocations that do not concern foreigners in an irregular situation. They must be expelled. I’Etat has planned to destroy about fifteen slums throughout the island. New demolition operations are expected to begin in the coming weeks.
