The famous dictionary of Little Robert added the pronoun “iel”, the contraction of “he” and “she”, to its digital edition. The pronoun can be used for people who do not recognize themselves in the masculine or the feminine. The term has not yet entered into everyday language.
In our dictionaries and grammar books, if there is one page that has not moved for a long time, it is that of personal pronouns. But that could change: in addition to “he”, masculine pronoun, and of “she”, its feminine counterpart, it will perhaps be necessary to add the pronoun “iel”, contraction of the two to evoke a person, whatever his kind. The dictionary Le Petit Robert just added it to its digital edition.
A novelty which scandalizes the deputy of Indre, who appeals to the French Academy. “It is a militant act. When you are a school reference, there are prohibitions not to be crossed”, believes the elected by the majority. The Minister of Education, Jean-Michel Blanquer also supported the deputy. But the pronoun “iel” is already well used on social networks and by young people. According to a recent survey, 22% of 18-30 year olds say they do not recognize themselves in the girl / boy pattern. Le Petit Robert assures only wanting to enlighten the population on a new word, which is neither assent nor adhesion.
