This new global campaign, called “Act for Ukraine”, will allow Canadians, among others, to offer their support to Ukrainians.
For the occasion, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and the European Commission will collaborate with the international organization Global Citizen to organize a donors’ conference, the “highlight” of this particular day.
“Today, our message to the people of Ukraine is this: we stand with you. When we all work together, we can provide the best possible outcome for people forced to move because of President Putin’s illegal and unjustifiable invasion of Ukraine,” the Canadian Prime Minister said in a statement on Saturday.
President Zelensky called on the people of the world to come together to help his people, torn apart by war since February 24. To date, nearly 3.8m Ukrainians have fled the country.
“On April 9, a big rally will be held on social media to support people who have been forced to flee Ukraine. Everyone is invited to participate: musicians, actors, athletes, businessmen, politicians, everyone. Everyone who wants to join this movement and ‘Act for Ukraine’,” Zelensky said.
For its part, the European Commission has launched a cry from the heart on behalf of the Ukrainian people. “Since the beginning of the war, a Ukrainian child has become a refugee almost every second. The world must come to their aid. […] The courageous Ukrainian people deserve the solidarity of citizens and governments around the world,” said its president, Ursula von der Leyen.
