(Ottawa) The Liberal government unveils various measures intended to improve the functioning of the access to information system, which has been widely criticized in the past.
However, it seems that any changes to the federal law will have to wait for the next formal review, which should begin in a year.
There Access to Information Act allows people who pay a $5 fee to request government documents ranging from emails and memos to reports and reimbursement requests.
However, the operation of the law has long been criticized as slow and cumbersome, often leading to long waits and censored documents.
The federal plan unveiled Wednesday focuses on administrative changes aimed at making application processing more efficient and faster.
It says the next review of the Access Act, due to begin in June 2025, will give the government the opportunity to explore ways to strengthen the legislation.
