Increase in mortality on the roads: the absence of sanctions for minor speeding violations singled out

(France 2)

After the publication of road mortality figures for March 2024, a clear increase compared to last year, prevention associations point to the fact that since the start of the year, speeding of less than 5 km /h are no longer sanctioned.

License withdrawal on the roads, from 9 a.m., Wednesday April 17. Deployed on the A5 motorway south-east of Paris, the gendarmes intercepted a young motorist excessively speeding. “The offender has a young license, so she is limited to 110 km/h, and she was controlled at 165 km/h”, explains Thibault Pautonnier, gendarme of the motorized platoon of Montereau-Fault-Yonne (Seine-et-Marne). A few kilometers further up, two gendarmes carry out speed checks.

254 people lost their lives on the road in March

A large number of cars go a little faster than the speed limit, but most will not be stopped. “What we really want is excessive speeding”, indicates Warrant Officer Gauthier Vesely. The distinction between large and small speeding violations is precisely what worries the associations, while in March, 254 people lost their lives on the road, or 31% more than in 2023. For the activists of the road safety, this increase in mortality is mainly due to the fact that since the start of the year, excesses of less than 5 km/h are no longer penalized.
