This Tuesday, October 31, 2023, Tony Parker was Mouloud Achour’s guest on the set of the show Click broadcast on Canal +. During his interview with the famous journalist and host, the athlete returned to the time when his career almost ended because of an evening that went wrong.
“I went on vacation to Thierry Henry’s house. We left in the evening, there was Drake, Chris Brown, and at the time, they were fighting for Rihanna”he explained before continuing his story: “In the end, things went into a bit of a tailspin. To protect my ex-wife (Axelle Francine, editor’s note), I took a piece of glass in the eye.”
In the euphoria of the party, Tony Parker unfortunately did not realize the damage. “As it was in the evening, I wasn’t paying too much attention,” he said. It was only the next day, after a long journey back to France, that he took matters into his own hands. “The whole trip I had pain in my eye, I said to myself: ‘It’s not normal, I think I have something’. The athlete’s reflex when you have something that hurts is to do tests. […] We landed and I went to the eye hospital. There, he looks and says to me: ‘You need to have surgery right away, you are two millimeters away from losing your eye if we don’t remove the piece of glass and it breaks, you could go blind’. I find myself on the table being asleep, surgery and I wake up, I don’t see anything and I’m like, ‘Wow.’ We were two months away from the Olympics.”

“Life really means nothing”
In shock, Tony Parker still can’t believe it. “What on an evening like that where it was quiet, we just went for a drink… I almost missed the Olympics. Spurs didn’t want me to do the Olympics, I had to do lots of tests and then I played with goggles (protective glasses, editor’s note), it was crazy. I had a hard time believing it. It just goes to show that life really doesn’t matter sometimes.” Quite an anecdote!
