Wednesday, June 14 is World Blood Donor Day. A simple bag of blood can sometimes save a life. Testimonials from people who have benefited from transfusion.

At two and a half months, Romeo discovers the world under the loving gaze of his parents, happy to know he is in great shape. A few days after his birth, he contracted a very virulent jaundice. “He destroyed red blood cells. He didn’t have enough oxygen in his blood, so we had to give him a transfusion., details Sarah Duchemann, the mother. Hospitalized at the Dijon University Hospital (Côtes d’Or), he was 10 days old when he received a blood bag.

One million people are treated each year

It sometimes takes around fifty transfusions before remission is achieved. Marie Balan developed leukemia at age 15. Blood donations helped to treat her just as much as chemotherapy. “I needed blood donation immediately, because the leukemia I had had destroyed my platelets. My vital prognosis was engaged”, she explains. She now runs once a week at 24 to hear the blood pounding in her veins. Like any transfused person, Marie cannot donate blood, so she donates blood to the association. Every year, blood donation helps treat one million people.
