The successive heat waves that have crossed France in recent weeks are difficult for the elderly to bear. In Villefranche-de-Lauragais, in Haute-Garonne, the inhabitants adapt their pace of life to these extreme temperatures.

With 28°C already in the morning, the streets of the small town of Villefranche-de-Lauragais, in Haute-Garonne, are not very busy, and the shutters are already closed. The heat is particularly difficult for the elderly. “We need it, the sun, but it’s not a normal sun, that. This heat is not normal”, assures a woman. At the café de la commune, we share the same opinion and we only leave the house in the morning. “Do you realize, 40 [degrés], you have to keep them. I like the heat, but too much is too much”summarizes one of the customers.

To stay active despite the heat wave, Joseph Pinel set his alarm clock at 5:30 a.m. to take care of his garden. “You have to go there at daybreak, that’s very good”, he explains, he who stops all outdoor activity after 9 a.m. For her part, at 80, his wife Irène does not intend to give up her daily walk. “It worries me a lot”, she confides, however, about these scorching episodes. “Are we going to do something for our planet? We will have to respect it a little bit, all the same”, she says.
