Technical problems disrupt Air Canada flights

Air Canada says its communications system has started to stabilize after experiencing computer issues Thursday morning, but travelers should still expect delays and cancellations before it becomes fully operational again.

The Montreal airline advises travelers to check the status of their flights, as computer problems arise for the second time in a week.

A total of 205 Air Canada flights, or 39% of the company’s scheduled flights, were delayed Thursday, and another 28 were canceled, according to tracking service FlightAware. Air Canada Rouge also recorded 76 delays, or 51% of its flights, as well as six cancellations.

Air Canada said the latest issue affected “the same system” as last Thursday, but was not related to the latter failure.

The system in question is used to communicate with aircraft and monitor their performance. “We are in the process of upgrading this system using third-party technology. Air Canada will continue to work with the manufacturer to ensure system stability in the future,” the airline explained by email. “We apologize for the impact on our customers and thank them for their patience. We are working hard to get people started as soon as possible. »

The company noted Thursday afternoon that its planes “continued to move, albeit at a slower than normal rate.” “As a result, customers may experience delays and, in some cases, cancellations as we progress through the recovery. We have also implemented a flexible policy for those wishing to change their travel plans free of charge. »
