Take advantage of the school break to visit museums

This text is part of the special Spring Break booklet

It’s spring break, but you don’t have to relax your brain! Why not take the opportunity to learn other than on school benches? We can go to the museum, for example, where we try to provide exhibitions and activities capable of attracting a young audience. Here are six suggestions.

MNBAQ

Manif d’art 10 – The Quebec Biennial: Illusions are real

After a year’s hiatus, the current art exhibition is back, organized by Manif d’art 10 – La biennale de Québec and the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec (MNBAQ). This year, the works brought together were produced by 21 artists on the theme Illusions are real. For spring break, from March 7 to 11, the MNBAQ organizes special 20-minute visits for the family. An independent game trail in the exhibition has also been organized for families, as has the Optical Superposition creation workshop. Until April 24

MMFA

purple hour by Nicolas Party

The exhibition purple hour by Nicolas Party is moving to the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (MMFA) just in time for spring break. The artist born in Lausanne and who now shares his life between New York and Brussels presents around a hundred works there. He even used the walls of the museum to create large ephemeral murals. Recognized for the use of vibrant colors, the one who made his debut as a graffiti artist presents landscapes, portraits and still lifes that illustrate the complex and often inextricable links between human beings and nature. To give an auditory dimension to this immersive exhibition, singer-songwriter Pierre Lapointe even created a soundtrack with original creations and covers of works by great masters from here and elsewhere. Families are also invited to two creative workshops around this exhibition: Crazy shapes, to give life to a cut-out shape, and Supernatural nature, to learn about the expressive style of Nicolas Party by creating a collective landscape. Until October 16.

Civilization Museum

Oh shit!

The Musée de la civilization de Québec offers an invitation to see excrement from a new angle. A taboo subject, poo is also particularly misunderstood even if it is part of our daily lives. It reveals our state of health and our diet. It is also a source of social and environmental issues as a large part of the world’s population does not have access to safe toilets. In some developing countries, women even risk their lives when they go for a number two. Fecal matter itself is also the world’s most underestimated inexhaustible resource. Shit ! It is finally a rather rich subject for such an unloved substance! Until March 26, 2023.

McCord Museum

Indigenous Voices Today: Knowledge, Trauma, Resilience

Why not take advantage of the break to meet the First Peoples? This is what the McCord Museum offers with its new permanent exhibition Indigenous Voices Today: Knowledge, Trauma, Resilience. We discover objects from the Museum’s Aboriginal Cultures collection and testimonials from members of the 11 nations of Quebec to highlight a contemporary vision of Aboriginal realities. Several activities are also planned especially for spring break, from February 28 to March 4, such as screenings of short Aboriginal animated films.

Pointe-a-Calliere

Make way for the circus!

This is the last chance to visit Make way for the circus! at Pointe-a-Calliere. This exhibition recounts the evolution of this living art, from the first European and American troupes to today’s large-scale shows. Of course, it honors Quebec circus arts, while several troupes enjoy international success.

Costumes, accessories, sets, models: more than 350 objects have been brought together for the occasion. In addition to emblematic characters of the modern circus, the exhibition allows you to discover the different disciplines of the circus arts, the reality of life on tour, the preparation necessary for the presentation of a show and life after the circus.

Several free outdoor activities are also organized for families from February 26 to March 5, including performances and workshops offered by circus artists. Until March 6.

Rio Tinto Alcan Planetarium

Discover the probes Rosetta and To travel

What are the technical and scientific challenges when exploring a comet? We can discover it at the Planétarium Rio Tinto Alcan from February 26 by following the adventures of the probe Rosetta and from its lander Philae to comet 67P/Tchourioumov-Guérassimenko.

We also take advantage of his visit to see Voyager probes. The endless journey. We follow these two probes launched in 1977 to explore the most distant planets of the solar system: Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. After four decades, the two probes continue to explore outer space carrying a message from humanity to the stars.
