Poland’s Iga Swiatek easily defeated American Coco Gauff 6-1, 6-3 to win the French Open for the second time in her career.
Swiatek only took 68 minutes to win against an opponent who was visibly very nervous at the start of the game.
Gauff pulled herself together a bit in the second run, but too little too late.
The young American spent long moments in tears in her chair after the meeting.
With this victory, Swiatek consolidates its first place at the top of the WTA world rankings, in addition to equaling the mark of 35 consecutive victories, achieved by Venus Williams in 2000.
The 21-year-old has now won her last six tournaments and is 42-3 on a season-to-date basis.
She has emerged as the dominant figure in women’s tennis, replacing Serena Williams, winner of 23 Grand Slam titles but absent from the courts for almost a year due to injuries, as well as Ashleigh Barty, who announced in March that she was retiring at the age of 25, when she was ranked number one in the world.
This allowed Swiatek to climb to the top spot. She has since shown that she deserves this place, with her greatest triumphs on clay. She won in Paris in 2020, becoming the first Polish woman to win a Grand Slam.
Her last defeat came in February, against the 2017 champion at Porte d’Auteuil, Jelena Ostapenko.
