The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) in Nova Scotia have arrested a suspect in connection with an alleged ax attack in Thorburn, which left one person seriously injured.
RCMP said late Monday morning they were lifting an emergency alert after arresting 61-year-old John Douglas Cress.
Earlier in the day, federal police had asked residents in the Thorburn area to take shelter because it was believed the suspect had fled on foot into the woods.
RCMP say a man attacked the victim with an ax at a residence on Greenwood Street in Thorburn, about ten kilometers east of New Glasgow. Investigators say the attacker knew the victim, who was seriously injured.
The RCMP said Monday that the suspect was arrested “safely” and that police will remain in the area to continue their investigation.
