(Ottawa) Splattered by a misconduct complaint, Supreme Court of Canada Justice Russell Brown has decided to resign.
“The Canadian Judicial Council [CCM] was informed today of Justice Russell Brown’s decision to retire as a Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada, effective immediately,” the organization wrote on its website Monday.
Judge Brown was the subject of a CJC investigation in connection with events that occurred last January at the posh Omni Scottsdale Resort & Spa in Arizona. He was then involved in an altercation during an evening at the hotel bus.
Put on leave by the Supreme Court of Canada, the Alberta magistrate admitted to having been involved in a scuffle, but denied outright the information that harassing behavior on his part was at its origin.
Now that he has decided to hang up his toga, the CCM is putting an end to the investigation he had started on this affair.
“As Judge Brown is no longer a judge, the Council’s jurisdiction over the complaint against him has ended under the Act. As such, proceedings before the Council involving Judge Brown have come to an end,” reads the organization’s website.
Born in British Columbia, Justice Brown made his career in Alberta. He was appointed a judge of the Supreme Court of Canada on August 31, 2015.
