The Amazon covers 60% of the territory brazilian, but has lost the equivalent of Belgium in area in three years. Deforestation is dramatic and cattle breeding is one of the causes.
The Amazon is burning, its deforestation has accelerated further this summer. The main reason is cattle breeding. In Brazil, environmental and indigenous associations are challenging Carrefour and the stores of the Casino group. According to them, they would sell meat from this deforestation. They fight against the farmers who burn the forest to install oxen there and against the giants who buy this meat. “The influence of Carrefour and Casino on our territory is very complicated for us because they are the first source, the first vectors of the invasion of our territory”says Bitate Uru Eu Wau Wau, leader of an indigenous group.
In hidden camera, an activist finds in a Carrefour supermarket, leader in Brazil, meat from slaughterhouses in the viewfinder of associations. Carrefour has announced that it is strengthening its policy against deforestation. The group has set up a special fund and a struggle committee. However, the report took place after this announcement. “We think we suspended these two slaughterhouses, we suspended them at the beginning of September”, argues Carine Kraus, Executive Director of Engagement, Carrefour Group. The Casino group, for its part, disputes the origin of the meat from its slaughterhouses.
