Lars Eller found his way back to center, setting up the tying net and then scoring the game-winning goal to lead the Washington Capitals to a 4-2 win over the Boston Bruins on Sunday.
Eller returned to his natural center position only as Nicklas Backstrom was sidelined. The Capitals justified this decision by explaining that it was to “maintain physical fitness [de Backstrom] “. Eller has played the last two games on the left of emerging center Connor McMichael.
Tom Wilson, Alex Ovechkin and John Carlson also scored for the Capitals, who have won their last three games. Wilson hit the 50-point plateau in a season for the first time in his career thanks to Eller’s discount.
Ovechkin hit the target for the 45and times of the season and for the 775and times in his career.
Vitek Vanecek stopped 30 shots for the Capitals.
During the game, the Bruins lost the services of first pair defenseman Matt Grzelcyk, who was injured while checking Garnet Hathaway. The formation of Massachusetts had already to deal with the absences of two key players in David Pastrnak and Hampus Lindholm, both on the sidelines.
Curtis Lazar and Erik Haula rocked the ropes for the Bruins, who saw Linus Ullmark block 27 shots in the loss.
