street fishing

Bruno Garcia from the Charente-Maritime fishing federation introduces us to street fishing this week on France Bleu la Rochelle.

Bruno Garcia : I have said it over and over again, I think that the French language is rich enough to express everything related to fishing, but unfortunately if I want, today, to be heard by our young generations of fishermen, I have no no choice.

Are we still going to translate?

Street fishing means: fishing in the streets, in city centers. Good but we will not be interested in the title but in the content.

The label doesn’t matter! What matters is what’s inside!

So ! So we equip ourselves with a pair of tennis shoes for example, it does not stick to the foot in the city centers, a backpack and some lures of different sizes and colors and we will prospect in the middle of these urbanized contexts. The advantage of this practice is quite simply that it can be improvised. It does not require any preparation and even less for those who live in a city center near a river.

Are we going to look for the predator in particular?

Yes perch, black – bass, pike, pike-perch and catfish if we focus on fresh water and bass, mackerel, sea bream, shad, etc for the maritime side. Both areas offer lots of possibilities.

Do we really have concentrations of fish in ports in urban areas?

You cannot suspect the fish densities that exist in the port of Marans, Royan, La Rochelle, etc. How is that explained? all the fish that I have just mentioned have a primarily carnivorous diet. They feed on small prey, larvae, fry, worms and wherever you have infrastructure such as bridges, docks, boat hulls this potential abounds and very often as they are predators it allows them to put themselves discreetly lying in wait to surprise their target.

Is it a very specific technique, very different from what is usually practiced?

As I was saying, we are going to dip our line near bridges, boats, pontoons and very often vertically. Your lure will in most cases be presented between the quay and a boat or quite simply above the quay if you do not have a moored boat.

Regulatory recommendations

Yes watch out! In Charente – Maritime, a prefectural decree prohibits fishing from bridges on national and departmental roads.

This is understandable for safety reasons with regard to traffic on these roads!

Absolutely ! So it’s not a ban based on the Environment Code but it’s very logical on the Highway Code.

A demonstration this weekend?

Yes tomorrow Sunday we fall back into the vocabulary of across the Channel: URBAN FISHING a competition which is organized by the fishing association of Marans, La Gaule Marandaise. It will take place in float – tube and canoe. The participants will aim for all predators but with priority for the Black – Bass since it is a fish whose populations have exploded on the Sèvre – Niortaise. For the small precision it is an endowment of 2500 euros of prizes which will be rewarded the competitors.
