Just like last year, with the Symphony in D by Franck by Alain Altinoglu (Alpha), there is some great work to be done from the first week of the new year, with the publication, Friday January 5, of this new concerto to add to the glorious discography of Canadian violinist James Ehnes . The sound beauty and accuracy of tone have nothing to envy of the legendary Perlman-Ozawa (DG) engraving and Stephen Rinker’s sound recording is a delight in clarity and balance. This neo-classical sound feast is completely opposed to the dry and mannered version, in our opinion overplayed in a “neo-false baroque” way, by Isabelle Faust (HM) which met with a strong response a few months ago. After the Russian Scherzo and both Suites for small orchestrathe major work (31 minutes) of the coupling is the ballet Apollo Musagète. Andrew Davis fortunately does not embark on a reading as contemplative as Karajan, but his direction does not have the sharpness of that of Chailly (Decca) or, above all, of Ozawa (Philips, Transfigured night).
