Storm Debby | Public Safety Warns of Landslides

Provincial authorities are asking citizens to pay attention to landslides in areas that were particularly affected by the remnants of the tropical storm. Debby.

Public safety asks citizens to be attentive to anomalies that could trigger landslides.

A crack, a bulge in a slope, a landslide and an unusual flow of water in a slope are anomalies which can precede a landslide.

“The torrential rains that have fallen in several regions of Quebec can cause landslides. Be vigilant!” wrote Urgence Québec on the social network X Tuesday afternoon.

Landslides most often occur in clayey soils, commonly called “loam”, and along watercourses.

What to do during a landslide?

If a landslide occurs while you are inside a residence, public safety recommends that you move to the side of the building facing away from the landslide, take shelter under a sturdy piece of furniture, and hold on to a secure object until all movement stops.

If you are outside, it is recommended to quickly move away from the likely path of the slide, staying away from river banks, trees, power lines and poles.

Obviously, you have to leave a house if it is damaged by a landslide.

Authorities recommend avoiding work that could increase ground instability, such as building an embankment, installing an above-ground pool or storing materials near the top of a slope.

The province declared 14 municipalities still in a state of emergency Monday following Friday’s torrential rains that dumped up to 175 millimetres of rain on Montreal and much of the province.
