Some dream of a luxury car or a trip to the end of the world. Steven Butler dreamed of giving his mother a home of her own.
“Another goal accomplished. Thank you to life for giving me the opportunity to buy my mom a house, ”wrote Steven Butler on his Twitter account on November 30.
The Montrealer has been fondling what he calls his “childhood dream” for a long time. When he bought his property with his wife three and a half years ago, he felt “almost bad. [de s’être] bought a house before buying one at [sa] mother ”, tells the pugilist to Press.
“I said to myself: my next moveis to put my mother in a comfortable position. ”
The opportunity arose a few months ago, when the owner of the house where his mother lived told him he was selling. She therefore had until 1er July to find new accommodation, he explains.
The prices [des habitations] have risen dramatically during the pandemic. I have my 9 year old little sister who was going to end up in a block of flats for the same price or even more than what [ma mère] was already renting.

The pandemic has hurt many people financially, including Butler. The 26-year-old hasn’t been in a ring for a few months. To help his mother, who shed a few tears upon learning of his intentions, he decided to use money he had placed a long time ago with a professional investor.
The market being what it is, the search was not easy. The boxer did what he does best: fight. Not strictly speaking, of course! He fought over bids for many houses.
“I’m a very positive guy so [chaque fois] I was like, ‟This is not the right one.” At one point my mom asked me to give up. She said: ‘Let it be, it takes too much energy.’ In the end, I didn’t tell her anymore [de ce qui se passait] because there was a lot of disappointment. ”
After two months of sending “a million homes a day” to his real estate agent, he finally found the gem.
Get out of the street
Life has not always been easy for Steven Butler, born in an HLM in the Saint-Michel district. “I’m a street guy,” he says.
“My parents left [le HLM] early enough, but I went back because my friends and DNA was there. I went back to the wrong decisions, the wrong place. I managed to stand out from the crowd anyway. I had problems when I was young, with the police. But I got out of it and I’m proud of who I am today, of where I am. ”
Young Steven grew up surrounded by two brothers and a sister. His parents didn’t necessarily approve of his choice to box at the start, but they respected his decision.
My family, for me, that’s all. […] She is always there in all my fights. They are the loudest in the room, they live the moment with me and support me completely.

Today, he is the father of the family. He and his wife have two little boys, 5 and 2, “daddy’s boys,” he laughs. He transmits to them family values and sharing.
“It’s even a project that I have with [mon plus vieux] soon, to go take food and clothes to the homeless to show him that he is lucky to have what he has, that mum and dad are working hard for it, but that he needs to be more aware than he’s a spoiled little baby. ”
Believe in
Steven Butler (28-3-1, 24 KOs) has been boxing for professionals since 2014. Like many boxers, his biggest dream is to be world champion. He was very close to it on December 23, 2019, when he fought in the foreign ring against Japan’s Murata Ryota for the WBA middleweight belt. He was defeated by K.-O.
“I had a depression following that defeat. I had my dream in my hands, my childhood dream. He was there. ”
The pugilist is not necessarily “proud” of his current position, he who then lost another fight against the Mexican Jose de Jesus Macias, last January. But he is hopeful to bounce back.
“I had meetings with Marc Ramsay and Camille Estephan. We want to get back to the top. My team believes in me, that’s what is most important. I believe in my abilities. If I didn’t think I can become a world champion again, honestly I would have retired from boxing.
“I don’t box for fun, me. I box to make my biggest dreams come true. […] I have the talent to make it happen. I have the discipline, the work too. ”
The Quebecer will fight on February 19, as part of the second gala in a series of three in three months highlighting the 10e Eye of the Tiger Management (EOTTM) anniversary.
“I already have the butterflies,” he says.
