“Speak Now (Taylor’s Version)”, Taylor Swift

In 2010, Speak Now was for Taylor Swift, approved country princess at 21, a decisive third album, a speech, almost a settling of accounts. The critics, the industry, the suitors, everyone took it for their cold. The music was also shaking its fist: it was not going to be confined to Nashville and it was beginning to be heard. In 2023, as the megastar triumphs in the stadiums, Taylor continues her fight against the exploiters of her young years: the master tapes of her first records do not belong to her, she re-records them. So here we go again Speak Now Taylor version, with half a dozen unreleased songs. Everything is more vigorous and muscular, pop has become pop-rock, not far from punk in particularly aggressive moments. Speak Now, wise in the first draft, moves into a teenage record in the process of revealing itself. In power, the thirty-year-old offers herself a youthful revisit, and wham in the gums. We say bravo.
