Spain investigates Katy Perry music video filmed in protected area

(Madrid) In her new video, Katy Perry poses as one of the thousands of tourists having a great time in the Balearic Islands, Spain. But some parts, filmed in a protected natural enclave, could get her into trouble.

The regional government is investigating the music video for his latest song, Lifetimesfor the clips in which the 39-year-old American singer-songwriter appears jumping and running in the dunes of the Ses Salines Natural Park, a protected area on the islands of Ibiza and Formentera, apparently without permission.

The images taken on the dunes of the private islet of S’Espalmador, “one of the most ecologically valuable sites on the islands” and in an area closed to the public with sticks and ropes, have sparked controversy, according to local media.

Regional authorities have opened a “preliminary investigation procedure,” according to a statement released Tuesday, on the grounds that the production company failed to apply for the appropriate permits.

The filming would not have constituted an environmental offence, as this type of production can be authorised with a permit, the Ministry of Natural Environment added.

The production company and Katy Perry did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The video, directed by Colombian-American photographer and director Matías Vasquez, of Stillz, shows the artist sailing, swimming or partying on the islands, one of the most popular and crowded tourist resorts in the Spanish Mediterranean, especially during the summer.

Katy Perry’s new album, titled 143will be released on September 20.
