Black boxes will become mandatory for cars from July. Every setting will be stored there. The measure is European.

The case is only a few centimeters and it will soon be in all vehicles in Europe. From July 6, new car models must be equipped with a black box. This data recorder is far from delighting motorists. Intended to ensure more safety on the road, this recorder will be able to collect five data in the event of an accident: vehicle speed, acceleration or braking, seat belt wearing, collision force and engine speed. . The black box will thus make it possible to collect 30 seconds of information before an accident and ten seconds after.

However, the boxes will not record conversations in the cabin or GPS indications. “This risks clogging up the courts with certain disputes aimed at discussing the interpretations that certain experts could have”, according to Me Franck Cohen, lawyer in traffic law. In the United States, these black boxes have been mandatory since 2014. They would have allowed a 20% reduction in accidents.
