There is a lot of talk these days about the housing crisis, but solutions are rare. I have not heard the option of oversized housing as a possible avenue to the housing shortage.
However, personally, I know people living in neighborhoods dating back 30 to 60 years who live alone or as a couple in the house where they raised their children. They get lost in these wide open spaces and, often, it is only sentimental ties that keep them there. If they absolutely don’t want to sell, they could have an apartment in the basement or upstairs. Another solution would be to rent one or more rooms.
In addition to bringing an improvement to a serious social problem of housing shortage, this simple and original solution would help to reduce the consumption of space and energy, which would be great from an environmental point of view. In addition, this would bring significant financial gains while reducing the surface area to be maintained. Ultimately, this could reduce cases of social isolation, common among seniors, or simply provide pleasant company.
