Some self-employed people will have to pay more social security contributions from next Monday.

franceinfo: Which self-employed people will be affected by this increase in social security contributions, and why?

Sarah Lemoine: HASToday, there are approximately 2 million active self-employed people, i.e. those who declare a turnover every quarter and pay social security contributions. Among them are craftsmen, traders and liberal professions.

Those affected by the increase in social security contributions from July 1 are neither artisans nor traders. But those who practice a liberal profession, for example consultant, translator or naturopath. There are 800,000 of them in total.

Since the abolition in 2018 of the social security system for the self-employed, 600,000 have been attached to the general Social Security system and 200,000 have chosen to remain with Cipav, which is the main supplementary pension fund for the liberal professions.

By how much will social security contributions increase for self-employed professionals?

For the 600,000 people who are affiliated to the general scheme, the overall contribution rate will increase from 21.1% to 23.1% on July 1. Then to 24.6%, at the start of 2025. And finally 26.1% at the start of 2026. An increase of 5 points in two years. So why this increase?

“We have to go back to the creation of the self-employed worker regime,” explains the president of the FNAE, the union that represents them. At the time, the overall contribution rate for the liberal professions was poorly calculated, he said, it was set too low.

For years, the shortfall was compensated by Cipav and the State. But in 2018, the State stopped the fees for those who switched to the general scheme. Since that date, the latter have been contributing for sickness, maternity, disability, and basic pension. But no longer for their supplementary pension, without having been informed. The increase in contributions from July 1st will regularize the situation.

What will the gain be?

According to calculations obtained by the FNAE, the increase in contributions will allow these self-employed self-employed entrepreneurs to obtain – in addition to the basic pension – a supplementary pension of 58 euros per month for an annual turnover of 4,250 euros. For a complete career.

And what about the 200,000 self-employed liberals attached to CIPAV?

For them, the situation is different. Unlike those affiliated to the general scheme, they continued to contribute towards their supplementary pension, between 2018 and 2024.

In the end, they will only have one increase in contributions, on July 1st. It is 2 points. But it will allow them to acquire additional rights, there too, for their supplementary pension.
