(Montreal) SNC-Lavalin announced on Friday that it was part of a joint venture that was awarded a $ 400 million contract to refurbish a Bruce Power Candu nuclear reactor.
The Montreal-based company said that its subsidiary Candu Énergie and its partners in the Shoreline Power Group joint venture, Aecon Group and United Engineers & Constructors, had obtained a second contract to replace the fuel channels and supply lines for Reactor 3. by Bruce Power.
SNC-Lavalin has a 30% interest in the project. The joint venture had obtained in 2018, a similar contract for the renovation of reactor 6.
Both projects will allow Candu reactors to continue operating safely until 2064.
The final contact covers all planning and execution activities necessary for the refurbishment of the reactor.
Work will begin in 2023 to remove and replace reactor-related components – 480 fuel channels and shell tubes and 960 end fittings. No less than 980 supply pipes will also be removed and project completion is slated for 2026.
“This new refurbishment of Reactor 3 is a continued vote of confidence by Bruce Power in our capabilities as an original equipment manufacturer and custodian of Candu nuclear technology,” said SNC-Lavalin president of the nuclear sector, Sandy Taylor, said in a statement.
