In Slovakia, a state of emergency was declared in the Titras mountains after a bear attack on Sunday March 17. Five people were injured, including a child.

Safe in their car in Liptovsky Mikulás (Slovakia), motorists filmed their encounter with a bear, right in the middle of the road. The animal brushed against their vehicle. A state of emergency was declared in the city, where the bear attacked several people. After scratching and biting five people including a child, the mammal, which can travel at more than 40 km/h, returned to the woods.

Very rare attacks

Bear attacks are very rare in Europe. “A bear has a personality exactly like humans. Plus we don’t know what happened before: maybe foresters with hunters, maybe he was attacked before…”says Rémy Marion, author of The Bear, the other of man (Ed. Actes Sud).

Friday March 15 in the same region, a 31-year-old hiker fell into a ravine after being chased by a bear. Several patrols of hunters and police were deployed to locate the animal. In total, more than 1,200 bears live in Slovak forests today.
