Six men will be tried on Tuesday May 31 in Bobigny (Seine-Saint-Denis) for thefts suffered by supporters in the chaos around the Stade de France, during the Champions League final on Saturday evening, the prosecution told AFP. The defendants were the last people still taken into custody due to the confusion surrounding European football’s showpiece match.
The Bobigny prosecutor’s office had initially ordered the placement of 48 people in police custody on Saturday evening, including a “significant number” of minors. All were lifted, with the exception of the six people referred to the criminal court.
Among the defendants are three people aged 21, 26 and 39, prosecuted for theft in a meeting and found in possession of multiple mobile phones. Two British victims have filed charges, while the owners of 14 of the stolen phones could not be identified.
A 25-year-old man will be tried for stealing a watch with violence from a spectator. Another 34-year-old is accused of having torn off a necklace from a victim and of having bitten the arm of his friend who was trying to intervene. A last defendant, aged 24, appears because of the theft of a mobile phone on the platform of metro line 13 from a British supporter who was leaving the match.
“No police custody was involved for facts related to intrusions or false entry tickets to the match“, the two main reasons put forward by the French authorities to explain the malfunctions, also underlined the Bobigny prosecution on Monday.
