Since 2000 | The share of people aged 65 and over in total employment has increased fivefold

The share of people aged 65 and over in total employment has increased fivefold in Quebec over the past twenty years.

Their share thus increased from 0.8% in 2000 to 4.9% in 2023, the Institut de la statistique du Québec indicated on Tuesday in its new Statistical Showcase on the aging of the population and seniors.

In the same vein, the employment rate of these people aged 65 and over has quadrupled, going from 3.2% in 2000 to 12.3% in 2023.

The Institute emphasizes that their employment rate continues its upward trend, both among women and men.

At the Conseil du patronat du Québec, Daye Diallo, Vice-President of Workforce Policy and Economic Intelligence, is not surprised by such increases. He attributes them, among other things, to the measures adopted by governments, associations and companies wishing to recruit or retain their workers, given the significant labour needs.
