Sikh leader killed in BC | Antony Blinken pleads for Canada in New Delhi

(Washington) The US Secretary of State has once again urged India to help Canada advance the investigation into the murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar in British Columbia last June.

Antony Blinken believes that it is very important that India collaborates with Ottawa so that this police investigation can continue to progress.

Blinken made the comments Friday after meetings in New Delhi with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other senior Indian officials.

The US Secretary of State argues that India and Canada are two close friends and partners of the United States, and he wants this dispute to be resolved as quickly as possible.

Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Canadian Sikh activist long described by New Delhi as an “extremist,” was shot and killed last June outside a Sikh temple in Surrey, British Columbia.

Three months later, last September, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau revealed in the House that there were “credible allegations” that agents of the Indian government were involved in the assassination.

“These are two of our closest friends and partners, and of course, as friends of both, we want to see them resolve any differences or disputes they have,” Blinken said Friday.

“We think it is very important that India works with Canada on its investigation and that they find a way to resolve this dispute cooperatively. But it really involves Canada moving forward with its investigation and India working with Canada on this. »
