A new sub-variant of Omicron, dubbed BA.2, appeared a few weeks ago. This mutation, which has become the majority in Denmark, is being scrutinized very closely by the health authorities.
The Omicron sub-variant, BA.2, would now be the majority in several countries. Could this sub-variant, scrutinized by the scientific community, call into question the drop in the Omicron wave expected in France? The Minister of Health wants to be reassuring. “At this stage, there is no knowledge of the risks of contagiousness vis-à-vis those who have already been contaminated by Omicron. It would not change the situation”, explained Olivier Véran.
In Denmark, the number of daily cases has started to rise again, since the subvariant has become the majority. It is however ttoo early to worry according to Benjamin Davido, infectious disease specialist: “There are no signs of an increase in hospitalizations with this variant. Within vaccinated populations, there is no impression that there is a greater risk of serious forms.” However, some scientists are calling for screening techniques to be put in place to monitor the possible spread of this mutation as closely as possible.
