180,000 lightning strikes were recorded in France for the month of June. Should we now get used to it, or even consider an accentuation of these phenomena in the future?

The June sky thunders like never before. Storms have multiplied everywhere in France in recent weeks, with a record number of lightning strikes. 180,000 lightning strikes were recorded on the territory for the month of June, against 172,000 in 1993, the previous record. In question : the recent heat wave which accentuates the intensity of the storms. On the ground, the temperature rises. The air is therefore loaded with humidity, and rises towards the clouds, where it crosses colder currents. The storm machine is then launched.

The month of June, normally, is already a particularly stormy month. This year, it’s stormier than usual, and it’s only linked to the weather configuration that opposes us, on the one hand, cold air and warm air, and it turns out that this contrast takes place right in France, hence these numerous and repetitive storms“, explains Peter Huatforecaster for Meteogroup. These phenomena are normal for this time of year, but global warming could change the situation in the future, with an intensification of thunderstorms and episodes of hail.
