Houthi rebels in the Red Sea: navigation routes have changed
Houthi rebels in the Red Sea: navigation routes have changed
(France 2)

Since the fall, Houthi rebels have decided to avenge the Palestinians by attacking ships from the Red Sea to bypass Africa. Navigation routes are completely disrupted.

The maritime route which connects Asia to Europe is disrupted by the conflict in the Middle East. Attacked in the Red Sea, the majority of cargo ships now sail around Africa to reach Europe. A change of direction which has its share of winners and losers. Since January, Athens has no longer been the leading port in the Mediterranean. It lost its strategic position on the route to Asia. A worrying calm for many dockworkers whose income is falling.

Since January, the number of containers delivered has fallen by 15%. It is mainly the largest ships, coming from Asia, which have disappeared. Because from now on, they no longer arrive via the Suez Canal, but on the other side of the Mediterranean. The big winners from this new route are Tangier, Algeciras, Valencia, and even Barcelona. This Catalan port has seen its traffic increase by 30% since January.
