Several heat records in Quebec for a June 1st

The heat wave that gripped Quebec broke several heat records for a June 1st in cities such as Montreal, L’Assomption and Val-d’Or.

This Thursday, the mercury reached 34.3 degrees Celsius in Montreal, breaking a record that dated back to 1892 for June 1, says Maxime Desharnais, meteorologist at Environment Canada. More than a century ago, it had been 31.7 degrees on this date.

The city of L’Assomption in Lanaudière was the place “where the highest temperature was recorded in Quebec” this Thursday with 35.9 degrees, underlines Mr. Desharnais. The old record dates back to 2011 when it was 30.5 degrees.

As for Val-d’Or, in Abitibi-Témiscamingue, the mercury reached 32.9 degrees, while the old record for the same date was 29.4 degrees in 1995.

“The heat wave that we experienced in the last few days will be replaced by a new mass of slightly cooler air tomorrow” in Quebec, specifies the meteorologist. The latter explains that the cooler air will arrive from the north along the St. Lawrence River.
