Many cities, such as Paris and Marseille, have chosen not to broadcast the matches of the World Cup in Qatar, which will begin on November 20.

In 2018, during the last Football World Cup, jubilation was at its height in a fan zone located in front of the Paris City Hall. But, in 2022, the municipality decided to boycott the Qatar World Cup. A decision that is not appreciated by all. “The World Cup is going to take place, it’s too late now. From the start, we had to boycott”assures a man. “Employees in the stadiums were mistreated, I think it’s understandable”said another.

The city of Paris believes that the World Cup in Qatar does not respond to ecological issues. “The environmental and social conditions in particular raise questions about the event”, explains Pierre Rabadan, deputy mayor of Paris in charge of sport. Other cities will not broadcast the matches, such as Strasbourg (Bas-Rhin), Lille (Nord) and Marseille (Bouches-du-Rhône). The air conditioning of Qatari stadiums in the middle of the desert and the non-respect of workers’ rights are denounced. Thousands of workers are said to have died during the construction of the stadiums.
